Runway's main site moved from runwayml.com to runway.com; the app and developer platform still use runwayml.com addresses.

What is Runway?

Runway is an AI creative platform that generates and edits video, images and audio in one cloud workspace, powered by its own models such as Gen-4.5. Built by Runway AI, Inc., it serves individual creators as well as brands, studios and agencies. Users turn text prompts and reference images into video shots, then refine them with editing, voice and upscaling tools.

The product family includes Runway Creative, the main editing and generation suite, and Runway Ads, which produces on-brand video and image ads and publishes them to Meta, Google and TikTok. Developers use Runway Dev, an API for Runway models and selected models from other labs. Runway also offers an Agent, Workflows, Characters, an MCP server and a ChatGPT plugin.

Runway key features

Gen-4.5 video model

Runway's flagship model generates video from text and image prompts. It is available on all paid plans, and the free plan includes a selection of models for testing.

Runway Agent and Workflows

Chain steps together and let an agent handle repeat creative tasks. This is useful for teams that repeat the same creative steps for many assets.

Characters and Act-Two

Create consistent characters and drive their performance for scenes. Act-Two maps a performance onto a generated character.

Brand Kits and voice clones

Keep logos, colors and voices consistent on Pro and Max plans. Pro includes one Brand Kit and one voice clone, while Max includes up to three of each.

Runway Ads

Generates on-brand video and image ads and publishes them to major ad platforms. It suits performance marketers who want to test many ad variations.

4K upscaling and pro exports

Paid plans upscale video, and Max adds HDR, ProRes and image sequences. These formats matter for film and post-production teams.

Runway Dev API

Gives developers programmatic access to Runway's models and some third-party models. It is aimed at companies building video features into their own products.

Runway FAQ

Is Runway free?

Runway has a free plan that gives 125 one-time credits, a selection of models for testing and 5GB of storage. Those credits do not expire but also do not refill. For regular work, paid plans start at $15 per month, or $12 per month billed annually, with 625 credits each month and no watermarks.

What is Runway used for?

Runway is used to generate and edit AI video, images and audio. Creators use it for short-form content, agencies use Runway for client ad concepts, and production teams use it to prototype scenes. Runway Ads also creates on-brand ads and publishes them to Meta, Google and TikTok, while Runway Dev serves developers.

Is Runway good for beginners?

Runway is approachable because you can start with a text prompt and a free allowance. Mobile apps and ready-made workflows lower the learning curve. However, the full suite includes agents, workflows, characters and APIs, so beginners may take time to learn which tool fits each job. Starting with simple generations is the easiest path.

Runway vs Pika: what's the difference?

Runway focuses on its own Gen-4.5 model plus a deep editing workspace, brand kits, ad publishing and mobile apps. Pika splits its features into small task-based apps that use many third-party models and has a cheaper entry plan. Runway suits agencies and production teams, while Pika suits quick, low-cost social content.

Does Runway have an API?

Yes. Runway Dev is its developer platform, which offers API access to Runway models and selected models from other labs for production-scale output. Runway also supports MCP on Pro plans and above, and it is available through the OpenAI and Claude marketplaces for enterprise buyers.
