What is D-ID?

D-ID is an AI video and digital human platform that animates photos or videos of people into talking avatars and real-time conversational agents. Businesses use it for training videos, marketing messages, customer support, sales outreach and interactive website assistants. Its self-service Creative Reality Studio lets non-technical users make avatar videos, while developers can embed avatars in their own products through the D-ID API.

D-ID supports video creation and live interaction in more than 120 languages, with voice cloning and multilingual output. Beyond prerecorded presenter videos, it offers Visual AI Agents that answer questions face to face and can trigger workflows, plus agentic interactive videos and a Video Translate product. It works alongside common presentation and design tools such as PowerPoint, Canva and Google Slides.

How does D-ID work?

  1. Choose or create an avatar

Pick a stock avatar or create one from your own photo or video.

  2. Add a script or voice

Type a script, upload audio or clone a voice, then choose a language.

  3. Generate the video

D-ID animates the face and lip-syncs it to the speech, deducting the length from your minute balance. Video length is rounded up to the nearest 15 seconds.

  4. Build an agent if needed

Connect a knowledge source to create a Visual AI Agent that holds real-time conversations.

  5. Publish or embed

Download the video, share it, or embed the avatar or agent in your website or app via the API.

D-ID FAQ

Is D-ID free?

D-ID offers a free trial that lets you create sample avatar videos, but trial videos carry a full-screen watermark. Ongoing use requires a paid plan based on monthly video minutes. D-ID's pricing page does not publish exact prices openly, so check the plan options inside D-ID Studio before subscribing.

What is D-ID used for?

D-ID is used to create talking avatar videos and real-time AI agents. Companies use it for training, marketing, personalized sales videos, customer support and website assistants. It animates a photo or video of a person and syncs it with a script or audio in more than 120 languages, and developers can add the same features through an API.

Is D-ID good for beginners?

Yes, the Creative Reality Studio is designed for non-technical users. You choose an avatar, type a script and generate a video in a few steps. Building real-time Visual AI Agents or using the API takes more setup, and developers usually handle those integrations. Stock avatars make it easy to start before building a custom one.

D-ID vs HeyGen: what's the difference?

Both tools create AI avatar videos. D-ID is known for animating photos into talking heads and for real-time Visual AI Agents and API-driven streaming avatars. HeyGen focuses more on realistic studio-style avatars, a script-based AI Studio, video translation and template-driven business videos. The best choice depends on whether you need interactive agents or polished presenter videos. Testing both with your own script is the clearest way to compare avatar quality.

Does D-ID have an API?

Yes, D-ID offers an API that lets developers generate avatar videos and run real-time streaming avatars inside their own apps. You create an API key from your account page, and documentation is in the D-ID Developer Hub. API usage draws from the same minute balance as the web studio. It also offers plugins for PowerPoint, Canva and Google Slides for presentation-based videos.
