Discourse: what it is, how it works & who it's for

Open-source forum and community discussion platform, self-hosted or managed

Updated · Pricing checked October 2026

What is Discourse?

Discourse is an open-source discussion platform that lets organizations run modern community forums for customers, users, members or open-source contributors. Conversations are organized into categories and threaded topics that stay searchable over time, which makes it well suited to support forums, product feedback boards and knowledge-sharing communities. Because topics are public web pages by default, a healthy Discourse forum can also bring in search traffic over time.

The software is free to download and run on your own server. Its maker, Civilized Discourse Construction Kit, also sells managed hosting, including a free hosted tier, paid Pro and Business plans, and a custom Enterprise option. Paid tiers add a custom domain, more staff seats and storage, API access, single sign-on, automation, events and gamification.

  2. Set up categories

Create categories and tags that match the topics, products or groups your community will discuss.

  3. Configure access and login

Decide which areas are public or private, invite staff and, on Business, connect single sign-on through OpenID or OAuth2.

  4. Grow and moderate

Invite members, use trust levels and moderation tools to keep quality high, and track activity with analytics.

Discourse FAQ

Is Discourse free?

Yes, in two ways. The Discourse software is free and open source, so you can install it on your own server at no license cost. Discourse also offers a free hosted plan with two staff seats. Paid hosted plans start at $100 per month for Pro, with Business at $500 per month.

What is Discourse used for?

Discourse is used to run online discussion forums. Companies use it for customer support and product feedback communities, open-source projects use it for contributor discussions, and membership organizations use it for long-form conversations. Threaded topics stay searchable, so past answers keep helping new members.

Discourse vs Discord: what's the difference?

Discord is built around real-time chat and voice in servers, where messages move quickly and are harder to find later. Discourse is a forum built around threaded topics that stay organized and searchable. Discord suits live, casual interaction; Discourse suits support, documentation and thoughtful discussion.

Can I self-host Discourse?

Yes. Discourse is fully open source and can be installed on your own server, giving you control over data, plugins and customization. Self-hosting needs technical skills to set up, update and back up the server. Teams that prefer not to manage servers can use one of the hosted plans.

Does Discourse support single sign-on?

Yes. On hosted plans, single sign-on through OpenID and OAuth2 is included on the Business and Enterprise tiers. It is not part of the Free or Pro hosted plans. Self-hosted installs can configure login options themselves, which suits teams that want members to sign in with existing product accounts.
